In accordance with the provisions of the Romanian Labor Code, employees are entitled to a certain number of public holidays each year.
Here is the list of public holidays for 2025:
- January 1st and 2nd (Wednesday and Thursday) The first two days of the New Year
- January 6th and 7th (Monday and Tuesday) Epiphany and Saint John the Baptist
- January 24th (Friday) Union of the Romanian Principalities
- April 18th, 20th and April 21st (Friday, Sunday, and Monday) Orthodox Easter
- May 1st (Thursday) International Labor Day
- June 1st (Sunday) International Children's Day
- June 8th and June 9th (Sunday and Monday) Orthodox Pentecost
- August 15th (Friday) Assumption of the Virgin Mary
- November 30th (Sunday) Saint Andrew, patron saint of modern Romania
- December 1st (Monday) National Day of Romania
- December 25th (Thursday) and December 26th (Friday) Christmas Days
For employees whose activity cannot be interrupted on public holidays (e.g., healthcare facilities, restaurants etc.), the employer must grant paid days within the 30 days following the respective holiday. If this is not possible for justified reasons, the employee will receive compensation of at least 100% of their gross base salary, in addition to their regular pay for the hours worked.
Additionally, employees who belong to a Christian denomination other than Orthodox Christianity are entitled to leave on Good Friday (the Friday before Easter), as well as on the first and second days of Easter and Pentecost, according to the dates observed by their denomination. Employees who belong to other legally recognized religious denominations are entitled to two days of leave for each of the three annual religious holidays of their faith.
